Do Corgis Have Sensitive Tummies? What You Need To Know

So you’ve heard that corgis are pretty hardy dogs, but what about their tummies?

Is a sensitive stomach something you should watch out for?

It’s a great question to ask, particularly for purebred dogs that can be prone to certain health conditions.

In this article, I’ll give you the lowdown on whether corgis have sensitive tummies and what to do if your furry friend is suffering.

Plus I’ll share my personal experience with my own corgi, Winston, and what we did to combat his digestive issues.

Let’s go!

So, do corgis have sensitive tummies?

Let’s delve deeper into the all-important question: are corgis prone to stomach issues?

Do they have more sensitive tummies than other dog breeds?

No, corgis are not known to have sensitive tummies. But there are lots of things out there that can cause digestive issues in dogs.

Since corgis are known for trying to eat everything they can get their paws on, they sometimes suffer more than others.

For example, Winston is constantly trying to pick up bits of food, old chicken bones, and even cat or fox poop off the ground.

Any of these items could be contaminated and cause vomiting or diarrhea.

That’s why I have to be vigilant when I take him out for a walk, scanning the ground for anything he might try and eat.

Watch out for regular dog food

However, even regular dog food can cause digestive issues in corgis.

Some corgis are hypoallergenic, meaning they are allergic to certain ingredients (like grain) in dog food.

My corgi, Winston, is hypoallergenic, and we couldn’t figure out why he kept vomiting for a long time.

After a few months of intermittent sickness, we spoke to our vet who suggested we try switching his food to a hypoallergenic variety.

Since moving to Royal Canin we haven’t looked back!

Winston is healthier, happier, and no longer suffers from sickness.

What food is good for a corgi with a sensitive stomach?

I’ve written an extensive article about which food is best for corgis.

It also explains what to do if your corgi is a picky eater (one of the reasons may be that they’re allergic!).

The food I use with Winston is from Hill’s Science.

Hill’s Science Diet Dry Dog Food

This dog food is ideal for corgis with sensitive stomachs or allergies to grains found in many common pet food brands. And it’s veterinarian-recommended!

Hill’s Science Diet Wet Dog Food

Nutritious, vet-approved ingredients and ideal for corgis that prefer wet food.

Do corgis get sick easily?

Corgis don’t tend to get sick easily.

In fact, they’re a very hardy dog breed that can withstand most things thanks to their history as a herding dog.

Like all purebred dogs, corgis are prone to certain genetic health problems.

But when it comes to stomach issues, corgis are usually absolutely fine unless there is an underlying health issue or they’ve eaten something they shouldn’t have.

Is it common for corgis to get diarrhea?

It isn’t common for corgis to get diarrhea unless they’ve eaten something bad.

Remember, ‘bad’ doesn’t have to mean out-of-date food or something unidentifiable on the pavement (though it absolutely can!).

It can also mean ingredients in dog food or treats that they’re allergic to or even cat food.

One New Year’s Eve, Winston and I headed to a friend’s house for a party.

Moments after entering, he gobbled down an entire (full) bowl of cat kibble.

About 4-5 hours later, he began to vomit and diarrhea off and on for several hours.

Panicked, I rushed him to the emergency vet where they gave him lots of medication and diagnosed the issue as… cat food!

I couldn’t believe it. I thought cat food was very similar to dog food, but apparently not.

The moral of the story?

Corgis aren’t prone to sickness or diarrhea, but they’re more likely to suffer from them due to their obsession with eating everything.
