Are corgis picky eaters? That’s a question I get a lot and the answer is generally, no. Corgis have a big appetite and love almost anything and everything they can get their paws on…
- Carrots? Great!
- Fox poop? Wonderful!
- A nasty old bone of something? Fantastic!
However, if you find yourself with a corgi that’s unusually fussy over their grub, let’s change that.
Here are 6 dog foods for corgis that are picky eaters—but first, some reasons why they might have gone off their food.
Why your corgi might be a picky eater
Before you can fix the problem of a picky eater, first you’ve got to understand the underlying cause.
Here are a reasons why your corgi might’ve gone off their food:
- Bored of the flavor
- They’re distracted
- They’re allergic
- There’s another underlying health issue
- Pickiness has become learned behavior
Here’s are some tips on how to solve each one.
1. Bored of the flavor
If you’ve been feeding your corgi the same food for a while, their pickiness might be due to boredom. After all, would you want to eat the same thing day-in and day-in out for years and years? I didn’t think so!
Try spicing up your corgi’s mealtimes by adding a bit of water or chicken broth to their food, add a topping like cooked meat, or put their kibble in a puzzle toy. This is a great way to make mealtime more entertaining.
Something else you could do is mix a little bit of wet food with their dry food. It may not work for every corgi (mixing two kinds of food can sometimes cause digestive issues) so try with a little bit of wet food first and see how you go.
2. Distracted
Your corgi may be a picky eater because they find their environment too distracting. This is particularly true if you’ve got small children or other pets running around while they’re trying to eat.
Make sure that you always feed your corgi in a calm, quiet place. And don’t forget to stick to the same feeding schedule every day. Consistent mealtimes are really important.
3. Allergic
I have personal experience with corgi’s and allergies. Around six months after bringing Winston home he started vomitting a few hours after eating and sometimes in the middle of the night. At the same time he suddenly became a very picky eater and often refused to eat his food.
At first, I couldn’t figure out why he’d lost his appetite. It wasn’t until I took him to the vet’s that they suggested the problem might be an allergy to ingredients in many dog food brands—specifically, grain.
I switched him over to a grain-free dog food and almost immediately, the vomitting stopped. It turned out the vet was right. Winston was allergic to grain.
This is a common problem in dogs, so if your corgi has gone off their food and is also experiencing sensitive skin, diarrhea or vomitting, I recommend you try grain-free dog food.
4. Underlying health issue
Apart from allergies, your corgi may have an underlying health issue that’s affecting their appetite.
Monitor your corgi’s behavior around mealtimes. Are they more lethargic than usual? Is their poop a strange consistency or color? Have you noticed them acting ‘off color’?
If you notice anything unusual in addition to their picky eating, it’s definitely worth speaking to your vet to find out what’s going on.
5. Learned behavior
Let’s not forget that corgis are stubborn little dogs.
It may be that your corgi has learned that being picky means they’ll get bigger portions next mealtime or supplementary treats in between.
If you think this is the case (and haven’t noticed any other behavior that could indicate your corgi is unwell), it’s important you stick to your guns and train this habit out of them.
Continue to feed them the same food at the same times each day. Leave food down for a maximum of 30 minutes and then remove it. As long as you stick to your guns, eventually your corgi will give in!
