How Do Corgis Show Affection? Find Out The Signs

Whether you’re already a corgi owner or plan to get one soon, you might be wondering: how do corgis show affection?

Are they a super cuddly dog breed or do they prefer their own company?

Now that I’ve been a corgi owner for more than 3 years, I recognize the ways that Winston shows affection.

In this article, I’ll share 6 ways corgis show affection and settle the debate over whether this breed is a cuddly one or not.

Let’s go!

6 ways corgis show affection

So you want to know exactly how notoriously un-cuddly corgis show affection?

Here are 6 signs to watch out for.

1. Wagging tail

The most natural way a corgi shows affection is the way all dogs show affection…

Yes, you guessed it.

It’s the wagging tail.

This is the universal sign of a happy corgi. One that is pleased to see you, is happy to be with you, and loves you very much.

2. Gentle nudges

Before I got Winston, I wasn’t aware of quite how much corgis love to nudge.

Particularly around breakfast and dinner time!

When Winston is craving some affection, he will come up beside me at my desk and nudge my leg.

This gentle nudge says ‘hi, I’m here…. remember?’ and I can’t help but stop what I’m doing and give him a big kiss.

3. Follows you everywhere

Corgis are herding dogs. It’s in their nature to round up not just cattle, but humans too.

Whether this herding tendency is affection or instinct or a bit of both, one thing is true.

Corigs are incredibly loyal dogs.

They love spending as much time as possible with their owners and hate being left alone.

So if your corgi is following you around your home, take note. They love you!

4. Bringing you toys

By bringing you their favorite toy, your corgi is inviting you to play.

And corgis only do that with people they trust deeply.

Winston will often bring his chew bone into a room where my husband and I are hanging out, drop it at our feet, and wait expectantly (with wagging tail) for us to make the first move.

5. Leaning against you

Some corgis lean against their owners to show affection.

This physical closeness makes them feel safe and secure.

6. Cuddling

It has to be said that corgis aren’t the most naturally cuddly dog breed.

However, many corgis do enjoy cuddling (even if only sometimes!).

Some corgis try and climb up on their owners’ laps.

Others will rest their head in their owners’ hands.

And some lucky corgis will get the chance to cuddle up with their owners on the couch or bed.

Are corgis very affectionate?

Yes, corgis are affectionate. They are extremely loyal dogs who love human companionship.

However, most corgis don’t show affection in the most obvious way.

For example, many don’t enjoy cuddling.

They might like to be near you, they might like to follow you around, and they might even like nudging you.

But they might not like to be cuddled like a baby… trust me, I try with Winston all the time!

This doesn’t mean that they’re not affectionate or that they don’t love you.

They do, they’re just not into public (or private for that matter!) displays of affection.

Why doesn’t my corgi like cuddles?

Corgis aren’t a very cuddly dog breed by nature.

They are fiercely loyal and sociable, but they’re also strong-willed and independent.

This is because they were originally bred to be herding dogs.

They needed to get on with their duties: rounding up cattle, watching over the farm, and obeying their master (the farmer).

They weren’t bred to be lap dogs, which is why corgis today aren’t super cuddly.
