Why Do Corgi Butts Float? You’ll Never Guess The Answer

You’ve seen the adorable videos online and now you have to know: why do corgi butts float?

With plenty of mistruths floating around on the internet, I thought it was time to dispel the rumors.

Keep reading to find out why some corgi butts float and some don’t.

Why do corgi butts float: The truth

The reason why some corgi butts float in water is because their butt is made up mostly of fat and not muscle.

Because fat is less dense than muscle, it causes the butt to float.

Some people claim that corgis have the nickname ‘bubble butt’ because their backside is made up mostly of air, but this isn’t the case.

Another myth is that corgi butts float because they’re so fluffy… but as cute as this idea is, it isn’t factually correct.

@weratedogs Today I learned that corgi butts can float. Not sure what to do with this info, other than share it with you. 14/10 what a good buoy #weratedogs ♬ original sound – tyler?

Why doesn’t my corgi’s butt float?

Not all corgis are made exactly the same way.

My corgi Winston is a much leaner, smaller corgi than many others and I’ve never noticed his butt float (though admittedly he doesn’t get lots of opportunities to swim!).

Corgis also have a thick double coat, which makes swimming a lot harder.

Put simply: if your corgi isn’t carrying as much fat in their butt and/or they have a lovely long coat (as most corgis do), there’s a high chance their butt won’t float…

Sorry!

Don’t try it at home

Unless your corgi’s butt happens to float naturally while swimming, don’t force this.

This may cause discomfort or harm to your corgi. Remember: they already find swimming more challenging than other dog breeds due to their long, heavy bodies and stubby legs.

Don’t make it more difficult by pushing them under water.

And don’t ever put your corgi at risk by believing they’re buoyant enough to float in water without supervision or a lifejacket.

I highly recommend getting your corgi a dog life jacket to keep them safe while swimming.
