5 Ingredient Peanut Butter & Honey Dog Biscuits

These simple homemade peanut butter & honey dog biscuits are loved by Winston because they include one of his fave ingredients: peanut butter!

In moderation, peanut butter (that doesn’t contain xylitol) is perfectly safe for dogs to eat. In fact, it’s a great source of protein and healthy fats, and vitamins B and E. When buying peanut butter, opt for the most natural brand possible.

The recipe calls for a frosting to be added on top of the biscuits. You can make this or leave it out – it’s totally up to you. Scroll down for the recipe to these deliciously simple peanut butter & honey dog biscuits.

Peanut Butter & Honey Biscuits

If your dog is anything like mine, they *love* peanut butter. That's why I was so excited to make these for Winston! They're the perfect reward for a great training session or at the end of a long walk.
Prep Time 10 minutes
20 minutes
Servings 16 biscuits

Equipment

  • 1 Baking sheet
  • 1 Rolling pin
  • 1 2-2.5 inch cookie cutter (I used the top of a wine glass)

Ingredients

For the biscuits

  • 1.25 cups whole wheat flour 150g
  • 1 small egg
  • 0.5 cup peanut butter 135g
  • 0.5 cup water 135ml
  • 0.5 tablespoons honey

For the frosting

  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1 tabespoon honey

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper (or tinfoil if you’ve run out). Set aside.
  • Combine the flour and the egg in a large bowl. Add the peanut butter, water, and honey, and stir until you have a stiff dough. Don’t be alarmed if the dough feels very firm – this is normal! You may have to use your hands. On the other hand, if the dough is too wet or sticky, it may be because your peanut butter brand is more oily than the one I used. Add 1-2 tbsp flour until you get a pliable dough.
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough about ½-inch thick and use a cookie cutter (or wine glass like I did) to make shapes.
  • Bake for 18-20 minutes, until golden. Once done, set aside to cool. Watch out for smaller biscuits as these will bake faster and you don’t want them to burn.
  • To make the frosting, combine the peanut butter and honey in a microwavable bowl. Stir the mixture every 15 seconds until it’s completely melted. If you don’t have a microwave, you can use a saucepan on a low heat.
  • Drizzle the frosting over the biscuits.
  • Store in an airtight container.

Notes

Things to watch out for
  • Some dogs are allergic to flour and wheat. You can use rice flour or coconut flour as a replacement but may have to increase/decrease the amount of water you add as these flours do change the consistency.
  • Do not use any peanut butter that contains xylitol (a replacement for sugar) as it is toxic to dogs. Check the ingredients of your peanut butter before use.

How long do these homemade treats last
These homemade peanut butter and honey biscuits will last in the fridge for 2 months and in the freezer for up to 8 months. Be sure to store them in an airtight container.
How many of these treats you can give your dog
I recommend you stick to one treat per day to ensure your dog doesn’t put on additional weight.
What to do if your mixture is too wet before rolling
If the dough is too wet or sticky, it may be because your peanut butter brand is more oily than the one I used. Add 1-2 tbsp flour until you get a pliable dough that you can roll.

A huge thanks to The Cookie Rookie’s peanut butter dog treats recipe, which inspired this version. As you can see, mine are much more rough-and-ready than Becky’s. But I hope that shows you how easy these are to make – even if you’re a novice chef like me!
