If there are two things Winston loves more than anything else it’s peanut butter and cheese.
So last weekend I had a brainwave. What better way to spend my Saturday than make some really simple corgi treats that include those two ingredients?
These simple corgi treat recipes are made with 5 ingredients or less (water being one of them!) and take less than 15 minutes to make. The recipes make around 16 peanut butter and honey biscuits and 8 cheese bites. Your corgi will absolutely love these natural homemade treats. And the best part is, there’s not a nasty additive in sight.
Without further ado, let’s dive into the recipes!
Simple Corgi Treat Recipe #1: Peanut Butter & Honey Biscuits
These homemade treats are great for corgis because they include one of their favorite ingredients: peanut butter!
In moderation, peanut butter (that doesn’t contain xylitol) is perfectly safe for corgis to eat. In fact, it’s a great source of protein and healthy fats, and vitamins B and E. When buying peanut butter, opt for the most natural brand possible.
Ingredients (makes about 16 biscuits)
For the biscuits
- 1.25 cups whole wheat flour 150g
- 1 small egg
- 0.5 cup peanut butter 135g
- 0.5 cup water 135ml
- 0.5 tablespoons honey
For the frosting
- 2 tablespoons peanut butter
- 1 tabespoon honey
Equipment
- Kitchen scale
- Baking sheet
- Rolling pin
- Cookie cutter (I used the top of a wine glass!)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper (or tinfoil if you’ve run out). Set aside.
- Combine the flour and the egg in a large bowl. Add the peanut butter, water, and honey, and stir until you have a stiff dough. Don’t be alarmed if the dough feels very firm – this is normal! You may have to use your hands.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough about ½-inch thick and use a cookie cutter (or wine glass like I did) to make shapes.
- Bake for 18-20 minutes, until golden. Once done, set aside to cool. Watch out for smaller biscuits as these will bake faster and you don’t want them to burn.
- To make the frosting, combine the peanut butter and honey in a microwavable bowl. Stir the mixture every 15 seconds until it’s completely melted. If you don’t have a microwave, you can use a saucepan on a low heat.
- Drizzle the frosting over the biscuits.
- Store in an airtight container.
Things to watch out for
- Some dogs are allergic to flour and wheat. You can use rice flour or coconut flour as a replacement but may have to increase/decrease the amount of water you add as these flours do change the consistency.
- Do not use any peanut butter that contains xylitol (a replacement for sugar) as it is toxic to dogs. Check the ingredients of your peanut butter before use.
A huge thanks to The Cookie Rookie’s peanut butter dog treats recipe, which inspired this version. As you can see, mine are much more rough-and-ready than Becky’s. But I hope that shows you how easy these are to make – even if you’re a novice chef like me!
