But how do you know what’s safe for your corgi to eat and what isn’t?

Let’s dive right in!

What snacks can corgis eat? 18 healthy treats for corgis

Here’s an overview of the healthy snacks that are safe for your corgi to eat.

  1. Apples
  2. Bananas
  3. Strawberries
  4. Blueberries
  5. Carrots
  6. Watermelon
  7. Cucumber
  8. Peanut butter
  9. Cheese
  10. Oatmeal
  11. Yogurt
  12. Honey
  13. Rice
  14. Chicken
  15. White fish
  16. Turkey
  17. Cooked eggs
  18. Broth

Now let’s take a closer look at these in turn.

1. Apples

Apples provide a great source of vitamins for your corgi, including Vitamin A and C. They’ll also give him the fiber he needs to maintain healthy digestion.

Just make sure to de-seed apple chunks before you give them to your corgi. These contain a small amount of cyanide, which can be harmful to some dogs.

2. Bananas

My corgi Winston loves bananas! And I love watching him eat them. It definitely took him a bit of time to get used to the texture… should he chew it? Should he swallow it whole?

Bananas are a good source of magnesium for corgis, but due to their high sugar content they should be given in moderation.

3. Strawberries

Strawberries are a fun and safe treat your corgi will love. They’re full of antioxidants and provide a boost to the immune system, helping to prevent illnesses and diseases.

As with all fruit, strawberries have a high sugar content, so make sure you feed these to your corgi in moderation. And watch out for your carpet. I gave Winston a strawberry on my nice cream carpet and when I checked on him a few minutes later, it was stained red!

4. Blueberries

Blueberries are a rich source of Vitamin C and fiber, both essential components of proper canine nutrition. They also contain phytochemicals, which have been linked to anti-ageing properties in humans.

5. Carrots

Carrots are one of Winston’s favorite snacks. Period.

Not only are they a great source of Vitamin A, they also double up as a healthy toothbrush. That’s right, chewing on carrots helps remove plaque from a corgi’s teeth and promote all-round better dental health.

6. Watermelon

Watermelon is a great snack for corgis. Just make sure you remove all seeds and the rind as these can block your corgi’s intestines and/or give them an upset tummy.

This is the perfect hydrating snack for warmer summer months.

7. Cucumber

Cucumber is a great snack for corgis that are overweight. They’re low-calorie and full of minerals and vitamins like vitamin K.e

8. Peanut butter

If you’re anything like me, you’ve got a big jar of (crunchy!) peanut butter in your cupboard already.

Well, you’re about to become your corgi’s biggest fan because they love this stuff.

Natural peanut butter with as few ingredients as possible is a great snack. That’s because it’s high in good fats, protein and vitamins E and D.

Just watch out for peanut butter that contains xylitol. This is a sweetener that is highly toxic to dogs.

9. Cheese

Cheese is safe for your corgi to eat in small quantities and makes a great training tool. In fact, lots of people use cheese to conceal pills for corgis that require medication as they don’t think twice about gobbling it down!

While cheese is a good source of protein, calcium, vitamin A, essential fatty acids, and B-complex vitamins, many dogs are lactose intolerant.

Feed your corgi cheese in moderation to ensure they don’t experience any digestive issues associated with too much dairy!

10. Oatmeal

Oatmeal is a great source of soluble fiber and contains a multitude of minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. It’s also a good carbohydrate substitute for corgis that are sensitive to grain or wheat.

Vitamin B found in oatmeal helps maintain your corgi’s coat and linoleic acid helps maintain the strength of their skin. If you’re going to give your corgi oatmeal, make it with water and don’t use flavored oatmeal. These artifical flavors and sweeteners can be toxic to your corgi.

11. Yogurt

Natural, plain yogurt that’s free from sweeteners makes a fantastic, healthy snack for your corgi. That’s because yogurt is a great probiotic that promotes gut health.

As with all dairy products, feed these to your corgi in moderation because too much lactose can cause digestive issues.

12. Honey

Honey is safe for corgis to eat in very small quantities. However, I would avoid giving your corgi honey very often (if at all) because it has an extremely high sugar content and could trigger underlying health issues like diabetes.

13. Rice

You may have fed your corgi white rice before if they’ve had an upset stomach. This works wonders because it’s easy to digest and low in fiber.

Even if your corgi isn’t poorly, plain rice (without any additional flavoring or seasoning) makes a nice addition to dinner once in a while. Especially alongside chicken or fish!

14. Chicken

Cooked chicken is a great source of protein for your corgi. Not only does it make a delicious and healthy snack, it can be substituted for their regular meal or added as a topping.

I recommend you avoid feeding your corgi raw chicken to ensure they don’t contaminate salmonella or bacterial infections. And keep in mind that some dogs are allergic to chicken.

If your corgi has never had this yummy treat before, give them a little bit to try first to check this isn’t the case.

Last but not least, watch out for bones! Cooked chicken bones splinter easily, which can cause choking and/or damage your corgi’s gastrointestinal tract.

15. White fish

White fish like cod, bass and hake is a delicious snack for corgis that’s packed full of nutrients.

The omega-3 fatty acids it contains reduces inflammation, strengthens the immune system, helps brain development, and improves the corgi’s capacity to fight cancer.

As with chicken, I strongly recommend you cook fish before feeding it to your corgi and check for stray bones.

16. Turkey

Plain, cooked turkey that hasn’t been seasoned or cooked in butter is a great snack for your corgi.

As long as it’s cooked properly and all bones are removed, turkey is a delicious source of protein for your corgi.

17. Cooked eggs

Eggs are packed full of nutrients like iron, fatty acids, folate, protein, vitamin A and vitamin B12 that support your corgi inside and out.

I recommend feeding your corgi free range and/or organic eggs because the better the chicken’s life, the better and more nutritious their eggs will be.

Whether you feed them raw eggs or cooked eggs is up to you. Personally, I always advise against raw eggs to minimize the risk of salmonella, but this is something you can discuss with your vet.

When I feed Winston eggs, I cook them without oil, butter, salt, seasoning or spices. Sometimes I hard boil them. Sometimes I scramble them. Then, I like to add them on top of his kibble.

18. Vegetable or Chicken Broth

Broth is a delicious snack for corgis that works well mixed with their kibble.

Homemade broth is best as store-bought broth or stock cubes can contain a lot of salt and additives. Just make sure you don’t add onion or garlic to your broth as these can be toxic to corgis.

What foods can harm your corgi?

There are certain foods that your corgi shouldn’t eat.

Here are 9 of them:

  1. Avocado
  2. Cherries
  3. Grapes/raisins
  4. Garlic
  5. Onion
  6. Xylitol
  7. Alcohol
  8. Salty food
  9. Raw eggs

How many treats can I give my corgi?

Even with healthier treats like carrots, snacks should be given to your corgi in moderation. Especially because this breed are prone to obesity.

I recommend sticking to one snack per day. For example, a peanut butter and honey biscuit or a small banana sliced into pieces.
