Ingredients

  • 2-2.5 lb lean ground chicken (or turkey or beef)
  • 15 oz can 100% pure pumpkin pureed (or 1.5 cups fresh or frozen squash [butternut, acorn, spaghetti])
  • 1.5 cups plain old fashioned rolled oats (or uncooked white rice, brown rice, quinoa)
  • 2.5 cups fresh, frozen or canned (no salt added) mixed veggies (options: carrots, green beans, peas, celery cut small)
  • 15 oz can lentils, drained and rinsed (or ¾ cup dry lentils plus 2 cups water)
  • 3 cups water (or Swanson 100% Natural Unsalted Chicken Stock)

Equipment

  • 4 qt Crockpot

Method

  1. Add meat to crock pot (4 qt or larger) and break up with a wooden spoon.
  2. Add pumpkin puree and spread evenly over chicken.
  3. Add rolled oats, veggies and lentils in layers.
  4. Pour water over all ingredients.
  5. Cook on high for 4 hours or low for 6 hours.
  6. Stir occasionally, breaking up meat at the bottom.

  9. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Store in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 6 months. Portion the food into 1 cup servings in small freezer bags. Place in the refrigerator the night before serving to thaw. (For small dogs, serve half a bag per day).

Notes

Optional add-ins for variety

Canned proteins. 4-5 oz can each, drained:
  • salmon (in water, no salt added, remove bones) - great source of omega-3s
  • can of sardines (in water, no salt added) - great source of calcium, protein, and healthy fats (pictured)
  • can of mackerel (in water, no salt added) - great source of omega-3s
Egg shells:
  • Grind 1-2 eggshells in a coffee grinder or food processor - great source of calcium. Use a small grinder to get a fine grind. If eggshells stick to sides too much, add 1-2 tablespoons of water. Then drain over a paper towel.
Applesauce:
  • Add 1 cup of unsweetened applesauce - rich in antioxidants & fiber

Notes

  • Avoid gas forming veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, corn, and tomatoes.
  • For dogs with sensitive stomachs, it’s best to mix a new food like this recipe with their old food for a few meals in the beginning. This will help avoid a quick increase in fiber that can cause bloating.
  • If your dog tends to eat too fast, add more water when serving to slow them down.

Storage

  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
  • Store in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 6 months. Portion the food into 1 cup servings in small freezer bags. Place in the refrigerator the night before serving to thaw. (For small dogs, serve half a bag per day).
